4 Options for Creating the Perfect Colors in Acrylic Signage

Posted on February 08, 2018 | Posted by Kris Williamson

When considering signage for your company’s interior or exterior walls, there are many great options. One of the most popular is acrylic signage. Acrylic is an excellent choice for signs, because it's lightweight and durable. It also comes in a wide variety of thicknesses and colors. When selecting color for an acrylic sign, we offer a variety of options.

1. Standard Colors

The most cost effective way to create a custom acrylic sign is to use one or a combination of two or more standard acrylic colors. Acrylic is available in a wide variety of standard colors, including clear, opaque and translucent. These colors are offered in sheets that can be laser or router cut into various shapes or letters.

Examples (in the photo below) of dimensional signs we’ve created using standard acrylic colors include: Accella Performance Materials, Hunt Brothers Pizza, and Lancaster Christian Academy. Notice how the layered standard acrylic creates a dynamic, dimensional effect.

2. Colored Vinyl & Acrylic

Sometimes standard acrylic colors just won’t work, especially when the sign will be placed near other branded elements. In this case, vinyl may be a better option to achieve the desired color. There are three methods for using vinyl to create color in acrylic signage:

  1. First Surface - Vinyl can be adhered directly to the face of the acrylic. In the example below, we adhered copper-color vinyl to the surface of 1/4" thick black acrylic to create the Franklin Wheelhouse’s custom logo sign. This method was chosen because vinyl was the best option to match the client’s copper brand color.
  2. Second Surface - Vinyl can be applied second surface (on the back side) of clear acrylic. The clear acrylic will maintain a shiny face while creating the desired color. We used this method for the Cumberland Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics sign in the photo below. Notice the shiny, almost glass-like surface.
  3. “Sandwich” Method - Vinyl can be “sandwiched” between two layers of acrylic to create a beautiful, deep color that really stands out against uniform colored walls. This method also creates even more dimension! We used this method in the LSO Final Mile and Red’s All Natural Burritos (Red R) signs shown below. In the LSO sign, we sandwiched teal blue vinyl between ⅛” black acrylic and ⅛” clear acrylic to create a gorgeous deep blue. To create the R in the Red’s sign, we sandwiched red vinyl between ½” clear acrylic on the bottom and ¼” non-glare acrylic on top. This created a beautiful satin red look.

3. Painted Acrylic

We can also custom paint acrylic to match a company’s exact pantone color. When using this method, we can apply paint first surface or second surface. When the paint is applied first surface, the look will be determined by the sheen of the paint. We applied the green paint first surface to the Thrive Healthy Pet Market sign in the photo below.

When applying paint second surface on clear acrylic, the acrylic maintains a shiny face while creating the perfect vibrant color. This method was used for the blue color in the Barbieri Orthodontics sign and in the red color in the Ascend Federal Credit Union sign.

4. Digitally Printed Acrylic

Our fourth method for creating color in acrylic signs is digital printing directly onto the acrylic, using our flatbed printer. We can print both first surface or second surface on acrylic. This is the best option when a graphic with a variety of colors needs to be printed. We used this method to print the award recipients’ faces and the detailed map features on these architectural displays for Hunt Brothers Pizza.

As you can see, there are a variety of options for creating color in dimensional acrylic signage. If you’re on a tight budget, standard acrylic colors or available colors of vinyl can create a beautiful, professional look. If your company needs an exact color match, custom painted acrylic will work every time. And digital printing is perfect for graphics. In addition to color acrylic signs, we also offer brushed metal, frosted, and other acrylic combinations (such as acrylic with wood) to create the perfect sign for your business or organization.
