The use of frosted acrylic for the construction of indoor business signs really adds "class" and dresses up the look of custom signage. "Frosted" acrylic is actually acrylic with a textured, non-glare matte surface on one side and a standard gloss finish on the other side. Its use in logo, lobby, and reception signs helps to create depth and and visual contrast with other glossy sign components.
By changing the color of the gloss surface on the back of a clear piece of frosted acrylic, the presence of the frosted surface separated from the colored surface highlights the sign panel's thickness, given the impression of additional depth.
In addition, standard clear acrylic (two gloss faces) can be used in conjunction with a vinyl that simulates the look of etched glass. The vinyl is applied to the acrylic with selective openings that can be used to create a monochromatic logo against a solid color background (as in the Catalyst example below) or with colored vinyl inset into the clear openings to create an interesting dimensional arrangement (as in the MMM sign shown below).
Acrylic can be routed and drilled to create custom shapes and hole patterns such as for the architectural sign display hardware potentially used to hang the sign. For example, the Blair Creative Group logo sign is fastened to the wall with satin aluminum standoffs.
Although we typically use the frosted acrylic for larger sign panels, it could also be used for smaller designs.
The black frosted acrylic is compatible with fluorescent markers and actual chalk as an erasable chalkboard.
