Using the phrase "gemini letters" to describe dimensional sign letters is a bit like using the trademarked name "Kleenex" to commonly describe any type of facial tissue. "Gemini" is actually one of several high-quality manufacturers of dimensional letters used in commercial signage applications. It's more correct to refer to these generically as "dimensional sign letters."
Both Gemini and other sign letter manufacturers have capabilities to fabricate dimensional sign letters in a variety of materials including acrylic and metal (both machined metal and cast metal). Sometimes a combination of materials will be sandwiched together to provide a unique appearance and/or a desirable appearance on the face (ie., brushed metal) with a less expensive backing material to increase the letter thickness. The sign letters for COSTA IMC, shown below, use a thin brushed metal laminate on the face of the letters and a thicker black foam to give the letters additional depth and dimensionality at a much lower cost than solid metal.
And why do we refer to them as "dimensional" sign letters? In contrast with letters printed onto a surface or cut from thin vinyl sheets, dimensional sign letters have some thickness to them ranging from typically 1/8" up to several inches depending upon the material type and project budget. Using a combination of different thicknesses within a business logo sign, for example, adds dimensional interest.
In the dimensional sign letters manufactured for The Infinity Resource Group, we also incorporated different finishes (gloss on the black and gold letters, and matte on the gray). The letters and infinity symbol were fabricated from stainless steel sheet metal cut and welded into custom shapes that were finished and painted in the client's brand specification logo colors.
Dimensional sign letters made from acrylic plastic are typically cut from plastic using a laser cutting process. This creates a smooth, glossy finish on the edges that helps dress up the overall appearance of the finished letters.
Metal letters, which can be made from aluminum, bronze, steel, copper, and others, can be cut from flat sheets using a water jet process. Both brushed and polished finishes can be achieved, and if the final color needs to be modified, the metal sign letters can also be painted. The dimensional logo sign created for Franklin Synergy Bank was cut from copper.
Metals can also be machined and cast into custom shapes.

Dimensional sign letters can also be created for outdoor or exterior applications in plastics and metals. There is a wide variety of standard font styles available, and custom font types can also be created.
