What is the difference between a vehicle wrap and vehicle graphics?

Posted on November 28, 2012 | Posted by Murray Johns

Truthfully, the phrase "vehicle wrap" and "car wrap" could be used interchangeably with "vehicle graphics" and "car graphics" under some conditions.  However, "graphics" aren't necessarily a "wrap," but I think it's fair to say that a "wrap" is always considered "graphics."  But this is starting to sound too much like a discourse in math or logic ...  Let's see if I can clarify with a few pictures.  Would you call this a "partial wrap" (white car) or call it "vehicle graphics"?

My answer: either description would be correct! But, given that there are relatively large regions of the painted surface that are covered, I would likely refer to this as a "partial car wrap."

So how about this Hummer: "wrap" or "graphics"? (hint: it's already painted yellow)

In this case, I vote for "graphics."  And why, you might ask?

A vehicle wrap, whether it is a "full wrap" or a "partial wrap" is covering a relatively large part of a vehicle's surface, typically at least one fourth or so in a continuous coverage (not broken up into decals placed at different locations on the vehicle).  Think of the last grilled chicken Caesar wrap you ordered - the chicken and savory stuff were "wrapped" up and covered in a tortilla, not served on a plate with a few pieces of torn tortilla scattered around.

Some more examples of what I feel is more on the scale of "vehicle graphics":

And examples of partial car or vehicle wraps:

And does the question really matter?  Not in particular.  But often potential clients will call us indicating that they want to "wrap" their car, van, or truck, when really what they're thinking of is some vinyl lettering and perhaps some printed decals featuring their logo such as in the cargo van example below.

We enjoy both types of projects, and we only use premium "cast" vinyl products that have minimal shrinkage and generally a longer life than intermediate vinyl materials.
