Acrylic can be a great option for making your business signage stand out—literally. But what is it about acrylic that makes it such a good material for your business signage? Here are 10 things about acrylic that make it one of our favorite materials for making signs.
We just put up these large acrylic panels for Interior Design Services of Brentwood, TN. The wording and signage was designed by Birdsong Creative and then fabricated by us.
1. It's sturdy: Acrylic works great for both indoor and outdoor signage. It's extremely durable so it can withstand wear and tear from wind and moisture. It's a type of plastic so you don't need to worry about corrosion or other types of weathering like you might with metal or wood outdoor signage.
2. The coloring is intrinsic: The standard rainbow of acrylic sheets that we have on hand are made by pouring the color into the acrylic as is it is molded into sheets. This means that the color is embedded in the materials and won't come off if scratched or dented—unlike color that has been painted on metal or other materials. Coloring the acrylic this way gives it a glossy, "deep" look that can make it appear as if your sign or letters are actually made from glass.
Check out the richness and depth of color in the blue letters. Both this red and blue are examples of some of the standard color options for acrylic.
3. There are a lot of standard colors: Because acrylic already comes in so many colors, it's usually pretty simple to match it with the color used in a logo or design file. On the rare occasion that the color you need isn't one of the standard colors of acrylic, it's very easy to create the color with digital printing or using cut vinyl behind clear acrylic. This keeps the shiny face of the acrylic without sacrificing correct coloring.
4. Acrylic can pretend to be glass: Except that it's much lighter, cheaper, easier to install, and easier to work with. Basically it's glass 2.0. It can come in clear and frosted options—which can save a lot of time, mess and expense if you were planning on chemically etching glass signs. Not to mention it's much less fragile than glass! You won't have to worry about it cracking or shattering during a shipment or installation like you would with a glass sign.
5. Acrylic can pretend to be metal: No, it won't "ding!" when you flick it, but other than the way it feels, metallic style acrylic is often mistaken for actual metal. Purchasing metallic acrylics are a much smarter option than purchasing metal or even metal composite signs, though, for several reasons. For starters, it's a fraction of the cost. It's also a fraction of the weight. Metal can be difficult to route and tool—to get really fine details takes a lot money for tools and an experienced craftsperson—but really intricate details can be laser cut out of acrylic with relative ease. You can also mirror the popular look of brushed metal with different acrylic faces.
It may look like metal, but this is actually brushed nickel faced acrylic! We placed these letters on a frosted acrylic panel for Milnor Orthodontics to place inside their practice.
6. It's a friendly material!: Acrylic mates well with other types of materials and with itself. You can chemically bond acrylic to another substrate for a super tight finish or use laminates and adhesives to bond it to other materials.
7. Installation is a snap: The "friendliness" of acrylic makes it easy to install as well because you probably won't need to drill any holes in your walls or install studs. It's almost as simple as plot and stick! Most of our out-of-state customers are able to install their acrylic signs with absolutely no problems after just a few instructions from us.
We made this short video for our clients (or anyone) to help them install their own acrylic letters.
8. You can print right on it: Digital graphics can be printed directly on acrylic. This allows virtually limitless opportunities for you to put your own company's art or logo directly on the face of the acrylic. These are great for things like information plaques, door numbers, and wayfinding signage.
9. It travels easier: Because it's so lightweight, it costs your printer or sign-maker a lot less to ship acrylic signage than it does to ship metal or wood signs. This saves you money in the end because they'll have a smaller shipping cost to add as part of your final bill!
10. Acrylic is attractive: Look at it! It's a darn good lookin' material.
We love the way these letters turned out for Alfred Williams & Company up in Nashville!
