Questions Graphic Design and Branding Firms Should Ask Every Client

Posted on August 13, 2014 | Posted by Brooke Randell

If you provide creative marketing content for companies including graphic design services, brand packages, or even signage like we do, it's important to find out as much as you can about your clients before designing products for them. It only makes sense, after all, to create marketing or branding content that really fits well with the company!

Questions every graphic design or branding firm should ask their clients

Here are a few questions you can ask your potential clients to help create the best possible signage, brand packages, or whatever it is that you're creating for them.

  • What is your company's mission statement?: Even if your client doesn't have a strong idea of what their mission statement is (or they don't have one in the first place) whatever they tell you will help you understand their company goals and what they'll want the things you're making for them to do.
  • What have you got so far?: Do they already have a logo, a website, recent exterior and interior signage, or other marketing materials? By knowing what they already have you'll see what they still need or if they need to update their old materials. You'll also see what kind of styles and designs have been "okay-ed" by them in the past.
  • Why do you want new designs or branding?: Motive can be an important thing to note when talking about creating new brand expressions and graphic designs for a company. If they are trying to update their brand image because it's dated, unprofessional, or doesn't fit the image they are trying to promote then they can definitely use your services. If they are simply changing to follow fads or because their main competitor in their industry recently updated their website, then they might be changing for the wrong reasons and don't need a major overhaul.
  • What is your budget for this project?: This is very important to square away as soon as potential clients begin contacting you! How much they are willing to spend will, of course, dictate the kind of brand package you can provide for them. In our case, when people come to us with a proposed budget it makes it a lot easier to recommend different materials and types of signage they should consider for their project.
