Installing a Vehicle Wrap on a Leased Vehicle? Read this First!

Posted on May 24, 2018 | Posted by Kris Williamson

We’re often asked questions about installing vehicle wraps on leased vehicles. Although there are a few exceptions, most leases allow the application of vinyl graphics. If you’ve been wondering if a vehicle wrap is right for your leased vehicle or fleet of vehicles, here are some important things you need to know.

Check Your Current Lease Agreement First

If you’ve already entered into a lease, we suggest you review it thoroughly before contacting us or another reputable vehicle wrap installer. In most cases, vehicle leases don’t restrict the application of high-quality vinyl wraps or graphics. But it’s better to be safe than sorry! If you’re in doubt, call or email the leasing company and ask for written documentation which states that the application of vinyl graphics is approved.

If you haven’t yet entered into a new lease agreement (but are planning to), be sure to negotiate the use of vehicle wraps in your lease agreement. We often receive the vehicles directly from auto dealers to apply the vehicle wraps, so this process is becoming more standard.

Find a Reputable Installer That Uses Only Brand Name Vinyl

It’s especially important to find a professional installer with a proven reputation for using name brand vinyl. We use only high quality Avery and 3M cast vinyl for our custom vinyl wraps. Cast vinyl is specially designed to conform and stay adhered to the contours of the vehicle for many years. We also apply a laminate to the vinyl for extended UV protection.

Here’s a word of caution: Be careful if an offer on a vehicle wrap seems too good to be true! Although you might be able to get a vehicle wrap installed for a lower price, the quality of the vinyl material truly does matter. You may end up paying in the long run with damaged paint if you go with a less expensive, lower-end product.

Remove Vehicle Wrap Within the Recommended Time Frame

When your vehicle wrap is installed, be sure to make a note of the recommended time when the wrap should be removed. The lifespan of a vehicle wrap is typically between 3 – 5 years, depending on the amount of wear it sustains from daily use and from the climate/exposure it experiences. However, a wrap that’s well taken care of can last much longer.

You can learn about our recommendations for the proper care and maintenance for vehicle wraps in our reference sheet: Keeping It Clean – Care and Maintenance for Vehicle Wraps.

If your vehicle wrap shows any signs of fading or wear, you’re welcome to bring it to our shop for inspection. We can tell you if it’s time for removal. If you wait too long, removal may require scraping or chemicals which can damage the factory paint. Fortunately, most lease contracts will end before a vehicle wrap will reach the end of its life, so that’s typically not an issue for leased vehicles.
