12-Point SignWorks' Signage Projects Of The Week

Fast and furious: temporary food truck wraps

Posted on June 08, 2012 | Posted by Rich Novia

Last week we fabricated and wrapped two food vending trucks for The Art Institutes International Culinary School promotional project. The two trucks were temporarily wrapped in identical graphics but with different color schemes. One was all red with white cut vinyl and digitally printed logos, and the other was black with white cut vinyl and digitally printed logos.  Adding to the project challenge was the availability of the rented trucks for the event and a tight timeline- two food truck wraps, in 1.5 days.  And given that these trucks are normally in service for their owners,  the new graphics were to be installed over existing graphics on the trucks as well.

The wrap project started out with communications regarding various design concepts; the client wanted them simple and clean, so the effort came down to logo placement, sizing, and coverage.  Once the design and layout were approved, we began preparing for the installion.  Deciding to go with solid black and solid red vinyl as the background colors, we first wrapped each truck in the solid colors, then applied the cut vinyl white logos, and finally added the digitally printed and die-cut logos to the trucks.

Since these truck graphics were only temporary for approximately 3-4 days, we wrapped over the existing graphics on the trucks. We were able to get both trucks wrapped and graphics applied with about 4 hours of install time on Thursday, and a full 8 hours on Friday. With the client's approval, we handed over the keys, and they finished preparations inside the trucks for their event.

And what kind of event would require this effort?  It's an Art Institutes International Culinary School "custom interstitial," which will air on the Food Network starting the first week in August (we learned that a "custom interstitial" is a commercial that is supposed to look like television programming, but don't quote us on that!).

The following Tuesday, the trucks were back at our shop for the full removal treatment. Letting the trucks sit in the sun for a few hours to heat up made removal a little easier, but the tricky part during removal was not lifting the existing graphics off as well. All in all, each truck took about 2 hours to remove all the wrap and graphics completely, and the trucks were returned to their owners and are back in action, serving the Nashville area with great food again.  Contact 12-Point SignWorks if you're looking for custom food truck and vending truck wraps or need promotional signs and graphics for any event!
