Buildings often have multiple businesses located inside them, so a directory sign has become common place to help locate which businesses are where.  Permanent exterior signs should be made from weather-resistant materials, so the selection of appropriate materials in the sign design requires more than casual attention.  Metals, glass, some plastics, and some woods (read here for wood-crafted signs) can be used for exterior dimensional signs. 

In the particular application discussed in this article, we were called upon to fabricate a modern looking exterior building directory sign for Rolling Video Games and the other companies in their building while leaving some room for future expansion. Starting with a black aluminum composite panel, we mounted brushed aluminum panels via satin finish aluminum standoffs to the back composite substrate. This created the overall assembly that would be mounted to the front of the building, and the use of individual panels in the design lends itself to tenant changes as needed.   

Each panel - both the general address panel and the individual tenant panels - were decorated with the logo of each business.  We created the logos as an additional dimensional layer by incorporating laser-cut black acrylic and, where applicable per the logo design, a white vinyl applique' layer to provide additional decorative detail.

The overall assembly was rather simple but provides a contemporary look with interesting dimensional features.
