Hillsboro School in Franklin TN is a great K-8 school serving children in a largely rural area of Williamson County. The facility itself is one of the older schools within the county, and it was time to "dress it up" some new custom signage using the school's unique crest logo. Kari Miller, school Principal, contacted us to develop both indoor and outdoor signs to help brand the facility.
Ms. Miller provided us with the school's logo artwork including the crest and the Indians athletic logo, which consists of a block "H" and a tribal spear design. The goals of the school signage project included a unique dimensional and professional looking sign for the front office, entrance and concession signs over the gymnasium doors, a directional sign pointing the way to the front office exterior door, a "Teacher of the Week" parking sign, a large branded sign identifying the press box at the outdoor field, and an outdoor dimensional sign in the shape of the school crest.
The dimensional logo sign created for the front office is an interesting combination of materials and fabrication processes. The sign panel is a black acrylic material with a frosted front surface. We created the "HILLSBORO SCHOOL" dimensional letters from laser cut metallic gold acrylic, and the gold border was made from a metallic gold vinyl applied to the edge of the acrylic panel. We wanted the school crest to also have some dimensionality to it, so we routed the shape of the crest from a 1/4" thick material and applied a digitally printed gloss copy of the logo onto the face of the routed piece. The entire assembly hangs on the wall with hidden French cleat hardware.
The walls at the entrance to the gym had been painted a particular red from Sherwin Williams, and we pulled that red color into the design for the gym and concession signs. These wall signs were fabricated with 1/4" thick sign panel material faced with digitally printed graphics and a protective matte finish. The panels were hung on the wall using satin finish aluminum standoffs to create a dimensional effect.
There are two exterior entrances at the front of the school building, and Ms. Miller asked us to develop a "Welcome" sign that would also indicate which direction visitors would need to go in order to access the door leading directly to the school office. We also designed a "Teacher of the Week" parking sign. Both of these were fabricated with digitally printed graphics on aluminum sheet material.
The press box incorporated into the seating stands at the outdoor field was a large blank "canvas," so we designed a 4' x 4' sign panel (same construction as the interior gym signs) using the school's athletic logo. In order to protect these exterior signs from abrasion and to slow down color fading from sun exposure, exterior graphics are covered with a UV laminate (matte finish in this case in order to reduce glare).
One of our favorite pieces in this project is the exterior dimensional logo crest sign. We routed a 1/4" thick aluminum composite panel to the outside shape of the crest and faced it with a digitally printed copy of the crest graphics, modified to incorporate the school name. The sign is attached to the brick exterior using satin finish aluminum standoffs to create a gap between the brick and the sign panel.
We appreciated the opportunity to work with Ms. Miller to help dress up and brand Hillsboro School - it was a fun project allowing us to use a variety of materials and creative approaches to develop some unique signs specific to the school's logo.
