Super Deluxe Matte Black Color Change Wrap on a Porsche

Posted on July 14, 2014 | Posted by Brooke Randell

To quote Ferris Beuller, this car is "so choice." We really enjoyed wrapping this Porsche Cayman for one of our clients last week! The car was already gloss black, but he wanted to get the whole thing wrapped matte black.

The front of the Porsche wrapped, the guys are still working on the details and back of the car.

Full color change wraps like this take more time and expertise than, say, an advertising wrap or simple graphics. When we take on a wrap that's meant to fully change the color of the vehicle, we make sure that the wrap vinyl completely covers every exterior bit of paint. This means taking the car apart, to some extent, to continue the vinyl into the crevices in bits like the headlights, wheel wells, and accent pieces like fins and spoilers.

Our installers extending the wrap into the door jambs to make the wrap look totally seamless!

This particular wrap we went extra-detailed—more than we would even on a typical color change wrap unless specifically asked. Even though the gloss black paint wouldn't look that jarringly different than the matte black vinyl, the guys extended the wrap well into the door jambs, under the hood, and into the trunk to create a totally seamless custom look.

Finished and lookin' good!

The whole wrap took about three and a half days to finish. This is pretty typical for a color change wrap where we pay that much attention to the tiny details, whereas a typical advertising wrap on a much larger vehicle will take about half that time. You can't rush when you're making sure the details are perfect!

For this wrap we used 3M 1080 matte black vinyl for the entire car. We also used knifeless tape to make all the cuts we needed. When working on luxury cars like this, we usually use knifeless tape. Knifeless tape is a tape with a bit of wire in it that create a smooth slice in the vinyl when you pull it up without scratching or damaging the car. You don't want to risk putting a nick or scratch in a car this fancy with a razor or knife!
