Earlier this year, Nashville Neurosurgery Group moved into a new building at 330 22nd Avenue North in Nashville. The move brought together notable neurosurgeons from HW Neurological Institute and Tennessee Brain and Spine. With this merger, the group needed signage for their new building and their new name. We were asked to create the exterior dimensional logo sign for their new building.
The logo for Nashville Neurosurgery Group is a very clean and simple combination mark logo that combines a symbol with text. The symbol for the group is an uncomplicated outline of the brain and brain stem, representing the anatomical focus of the group's four surgeons. The group's name is presented in a sans-serif font, which makes it very easy to read for anyone approaching the building.

For this dimensional sign, we used lightweight styrene foam with a 2" thickness that was routed into the individual shapes of the logo. The foam was then painted with a black exterior texture coat. The black coating protects the foam from deterioration. The coating also hardens the outside edges of the foam to protect the sign from anything bumping into it or hitting it. (You never know when a crazy storm will pass through!)
To the foam pieces, we bonded 1/8" glossy black acrylic faces that were laser cut into the same individual shapes of the logo. The combination of the glossy black acrylic and the painted black foam creates a seamless look. To the casual observer, this dimensional sign simulates the look of unlit channel letters.

Installation is simple for this style of signage! We strategically placed 1/4" threaded metal studs into the foam on the backside of each of the individual pieces. The letters and logo were covered with protective paper to shield the glossy black acrylic from scratches while being transported to Nashville Neurosurgery Group. A template of the sign's layout was made to guarantee accurate placement of each piece.
We designed the sign to be minimally invasive to the structure of the building. Using the template as a guide, small holes were drilled into the side of the building. The individual pieces were mounted onto the side of the building by placing the metal studs into the drilled holes and using silicone adhesive to attach the remaining surface area. You would think that a sign with a size of almost fourteen feet wide by almost six feet tall would be a bear to install! Luckily, the use of the lightweight styrene foam keeps the weight of the sign to a minimum, which allows for a much easier installation.
