12-Point SignWorks' Signage Projects Of The Week

BL Harbert International's New Houston Office Gets a Custom Logo Sign

Posted on June 01, 2015 | Posted by Kris Williamson

The Predicament: BL Harbert International opened a new location in Houston, Texas, and they wanted to have a custom dimensional logo sign for the office space. They knew what they wanted but needed an experienced signage company (like us!) to make it a reality.

The Solution: Our 12-Point SignWorks team took BL Harbert's ideas and created a custom logo sign that fits the updated style they desired. Here's how we did it...

They approached us with their ideas for the custom logo sign. They wanted:

  • their logo in brushed aluminum
  • a backer with the same deep blue as their logo
  • depth when looking at the logo on the backer
  • standoffs or hidden hardware to attach the signage to the wall
  • a substantial, lasting feel

We took all of their ideas and created a thirty-six inch tall by thirty-one inch wide dimensional logo sign that makes a lasting impact on the neutral wall in their Houston office.

Here is a photo sent to us once the sign was installed. Thank you, Houston!

To create the sign, we started with a 3/8" thick acrylic backer that was back painted in a deep blue (PMS 294). FYI: Back painted just means that it was painted on the side of the clear acrylic that will be closest to the wall once the sign is mounted. This technique protects the paint from cleaning and normal wear and tear.

To the acrylic backer, we added the BL Harbert logo in 3/8" brushed aluminum. The 'H' was fabricated with cut-away lettering that allows a hint of the blue on the backer to show through. The text for International was fabricated using 1/8" thick brushed aluminum letters that match the sheen of the main logo. We used 1/8" instead of the 3/8" to create more face than drop-shadow. In other words, there would be too much shadow created by the dimensional letters if they stood too high off of the backer. The 1/8" thickness allows them to still have dimension without the shadowy effect.

The logo was attached 5/8" off of the acrylic backer using threaded studs and clear epoxy. Because of the free-standing nature of the brushed aluminum pieces for the B, R and A letters, each insert became its own little threaded piece that was secured to the backer with the epoxy. (You can see the threaded pieces in the photo above before they were attached to the actual sign.) For the text along the bottom, the letters were attached to the acrylic with VHB (very high bond) adhesive tape.

Once the sign was completely assembled and had time for the epoxy to properly set, we securely packaged it and sent it to the Houston, Texas office. The sign was installed on the wall using a template and four standoff barrels with a brushed finish that matched the rest of the signage.

Pretty much the same!

BL Harbert International is a well-rounded and growing construction company that began operations in 2000. Although they are grounded in Alabama, they are recognized as a construction leader within the southeastern United States and also overseas. They recently completed new buildings in Texas and in South Carolina. The new construction offered the perfect opportunity to create an updated look for the BL Harbert International brand, and we hope that the updates will continue at their other locations.
