12-Point SignWorks' Signage Projects Of The Week

Dimensional Metal Logo Sign (and more!) for GHD's Rebranding Project

Posted on July 13, 2015 | Posted by Kris Williamson

This rebranding project has been a year in the making! In July of 2014, Conestoga-Rovers & Associates (CRA) and GHD merged to become a global leader offering engineering, architecture, environmental and construction management services. This month marked the completion of the merger with the entire company now operating under the GHD name. As part of the rebranding project, we were asked to create a dimensional metal logo sign for the office (previously CRA) here in Middle Tennessee.

We were presented with a photograph of a similar GHD sign, made out of stainless steel, that exists at another facility. They liked it so much that they wanted to duplicate the same sign at the Franklin, TN location.

The logo sign is unique in that it has three separate components: a header, footer and oval panel. The pieces were fabricated as reverse channel letters, meaning that they have a face and sides but no back to them. We fabricated all of the components of the sign so that they would stand out two inches from the wall once they were mounted. Since the oval panel also has the GHD letters mounted onto it, both the oval and the letters were made to be one inch deep. Once the letters were stud mounted to the oval panel, the three separate pieces matched in depth.

One special feature of the design involved the brushed grain of the stainless steel. The dimensional letters, header and footer were created with a brushed vertical grain, while the grain of the oval panel and its sides were fabricated with a horizontal grain. (You can see the grain patterns if you look closely at the photo above!)

The pieces were individually stud mounted to the wall with one inch gaps between each section, allowing the wall paint to just peek through. The overall size of the installed dimensional sign is 24" high by 24" wide. Very impressive!

The dimensional metal logo sign wasn't our only project for the GHD rebranding! We also created a number of cut vinyl pieces for doors and windows throughout the facility. They include:

  • The GHD website in white vinyl for the entrance doors
  • The street number in white vinyl for the exterior doors
  • The GHD website in a repeated pattern to be installed on the conference room and guest office windows
  • Frosted vinyl applied to the interior surface of an office door for privacy

The photo on the left shows the cut vinyl we installed on the exterior doors of the office space. The repeated use of the GHD website can be seen in the photo on the right.

We also digitally printed custom window decals in the shape of the GHD logo. (You can see one of them in the photo above on the left!) The vinyl has a protective UV gloss laminate to protect the decals from any fading caused by the hot sun once they are installed on exterior glass surfaces. We applied three of the custom decals at the Franklin location, and the remaining decals are being distributed to other locations.

We think this rebranding project really came together nicely for GHD! The dimensional logo sign looks stunning hanging on the wall in the GHD office. From the custom decals to the repeating pattern of the website on the interior windows, the entire office has been transformed from the inside out.
