Our latest Project of the Week is BIG. How big, you ask? It's so big that we're shipping it by freight to Brooklyn, New York. For this featured project, we designed and fabricated five different dimensional acrylic signs for The Brooklyn School for Math and Research (B-SMaRt), and one of the signs has a diameter of almost six feet. That's pretty big. Freight big.
Here's a sneak peek of one of the B-SMaRt logo signs being shipped to Brooklyn, NY. You can see a bit of another sign with only individual letters in the background. Watch for Part 2, which will feature photos of the signs installed in the school!
Our relationship with B-SMaRt began back in November of 2014 when they sent us a web inquiry about dimensional signage. Typically, signage projects don't take six months to complete, but this one required some additional steps before we could start production. Many of our projects need specific permits and approvals for the installation of signs. For the B-SMaRt project, we actually became an official vendor for the New York City Department of Education. (I think it makes us sound like a pretty big deal!)
As we mentioned, the project consisted of five interior logo signs. Three of the five feature the circular shape of the B-SMaRt logo. The layout for the signs begins with a frosted acrylic backer that has been router cut into a circle. The logo is laser cut out of standard purple and yellow acrylic and then mounted onto the face of the backer. The smaller text is added with cut vinyl in the purple and yellow colors. All three signs are mounted to the walls with etched aluminum standoffs. The school requested the signs in three sizes: 20"x20", 47"x47" and 71"x71". The thickness of the acrylic varies with the overall size of the signage and ranges from 1/8" to 3/8" thick.
We lay out the individual pieces onto a template to guarantee that everything fits the way it should! Here are some pictures of Chuck placing the individual pieces into place.
The remaining two signs are individual dimensional letters (and a dash) that are mounted directly to the walls with studs and spacers. The 3/8" thick laser cut letters were created by bonding 1/8" thick acrylic letters in the purple and yellow colors to 1/4" thick matching black acrylic letters. When mounted, the letters fill a space that is six feet wide.
This is the proof of the dimensional letters that will be installed on the walls of the school.
We titled this blog post as Part 1 so that we can feature the installed signs in a future article. Until then, here's a little bit about the school itself. The mission of B-SMaRt is for every graduate to make a relevant contribution to our world. Pretty fantastic, don't you think? The school teaches the students that superior effort and determination are needed for success in school and life. Anything less than superior is unacceptable. I hope that this is the goal of all of the schools in our country, but we love that B-SMaRt incorporates their mission into the daily lives of their students.
